DERBY, Conn. (WTNH) — Some parents kept their kids home from Derby High School this week after an outbreak of hand, foot and mouth disease.
“I just know it’s really contagious so I keep her out to be cautious,” said Melissa Redding.
Derby school superintendent Matthew Conway says five kids from the football team contracted the Coxsackie virus.Related Content: Your Health: Symptoms and treatment of Coxsackie
“Monday all activities in the building were canceled and the building was vacated,” said Conway.
A letter from the principal warning parents went out this week. School officials took safety measures right away.
“We took immediate action. disinfected entire school as well as field house locker rooms, football equipment, water bottles. you name it. Anything that they touched,” said Conway.
Parents say it is worrisome.
“I think it is very concerning and quite disgusting,” said Redding.
JV Soccer Coach Tony Gonzalez said players on his soccer team are also concerned.
“They were worried about how it was going to effect besides the school the sports,” said Gonzalez.
After school sports will resume tonight, but not close contact.
